Okay, so I got a new job. I got over Low Life.
I even got New Guy as a bonus. The sun was shining, the birdies were singing, god was in his heaven, all was right with the world and guess what happened? I discovered that I was frigid. I suppose it was godâs way of reminding me that I was toe jam in his eyes.
It just wasnât fair. I had a few days to kill till I started work at the new place and New Guy had taken a few days off to, as he put it in his wickedly laid-back way, get to know me better. The venue was a beach resort, a little away from the city. It was Gorai beach where you swim not with exotic fish but with discarded plastic and foil wrappers. Despite the filth, the ambience was heavenly. Wordsworth would have waxed eloquent. I mean, it was more picturesque than bloody daffodils.
But to get back to my problem. Oh, I was very turned on, I could neck all right. But I couldnât go any further, all thanks to that Bitch Doctor who had got me thinking I was pregnant. I was scared. I didnât ever want to experience that sickening fear again. Initially, New Guy thought I was being coy, and was understanding and all that crap. But finally, on our second day there, his frustration began to show. âFor godâs sake, Arti, weâre adults!â His voice had an edge to it that made me shiver.
I had to come clean with him, and I stuttered, âLook, I know. Itâs just that I, um, canât. Hell, I was almost pregnant once.â
New Guy stared at me in disbelief, like I was crazy or something. âWhat do you mean âalmostâ?â he asked threateningly.
I shrugged. âWell, it turned out that I wasnât.â
He rubbed the back of his neck and sighed deeply. âOkay, letâs not get carried away here. Iâm trying very hard to understand where youâre coming from. Granted, condoms are not 100 per cent safe, but you could use an oral contraceptive, huh?â
I really didnât like the tone of his voice. He was talking down to me like I was a congenital idiot. I raised my eyebrows coldly at him as I delivered what I still believe is my best punchline to date: âOh, I already am using the worldâs best oral contraceptive: the word ânoâ.â
New Guy buried his face in his hands. I stared at my toes. We were silent for a really long time. I was thinking that maybe Twisted Spinster Warden had been smart to get a parrot. I mean, the parrot wouldnât dump her for not wanting to put out. Parrots are not demanding creatures by nature. And you can always turn them into a tandoori snack if they annoy you. New Guy broke into my reverie, surprised me with an affectionate hug and said, âYou sure itâs not because I donât turn you on?â
I said a muffled âyesâ.
âOkay. Then letâs get you sorted out fast, because this abstinence is killing me.
